Teresa Eguibar

Spain, 1940–2000

Teresa Eguibar was a sculptor who initially worked in marble, bronze and wood and, later, in polished stainless steel and iron.  Early in her career, she was influenced by figurative and expressionist art, however, as the artist matured, she moved into the abstract creating pieces that communicate motion and which sometimes suggest shapes of human figures, animals or forms found in nature.

In 1961, Eguibar joined the East-West group, an assemblage of artists from France, Germany, Denmark and Sweden who toured with their group exhibition throughout North and Central Europe.  Eguibar’s sculpture was also shown in the Second International Small Sculpture Exhibition in Budapest in 1973 and it is included in the collections of the Museum of Spanish Contemporary Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.

Having painted and worked in enamel and ceramics as a young artist, Eguibar trained as a sculptor in the workshop of Lorenzo Frechilla who eventually became her husband.
